WINE TOUR – Half Day

On Murgia plains, the road between Matera – European Capital of Culture in 2019 – and Gravina is a crossroad of history lost in the mists of time. The oldest archaeological finds date back to the Neolithic Age as well as the oldest resident of the area, the Man of Altamura.

What makes this a unique and fascinating area, are the endless fields of green grass, from which originates the Alta Murgia National Park and the Sassi of Matera, a Unesco World Heritage Site where cave dwellings are carved into the tufa rocks on the edges of the ravine; a landscape that is repeated with the same sensation in Gravina, a town only 40 km from Matera.

Vine growing here as in the rest of Puglia, has been introduced on a broad scale by the first Greek colonization, still evident today in the characteristics forms of breeding sapling or little tree.

Description Tour:

The area has never had a big production of wine for trade; was rather considered a caloric food, useful to compensate the poor meal of the farmer to breast long and tiring days of work in the fields. Native grapes that were able to revalue itself over time, like the Aglianico del Vulture, the Primitivo of Gioia del Colle; this is also the land of great white wines like Verdeca, a semi-aromatic grape variety with delicate fruity notes.

All these wines that talk about a territory apparently hostile for vineyards, where the soil mainly rocky and calcareous, but anyway distinguishes these wines for austerity and great structure.
